Winners of the Waipa Networks 2017 Business Awards
The winners of the Waipa Networks 2017 Business Awards were announced at the Gala Awards Dinner, held at Mystery Creek Events Centre on Friday 18 August.
Attended by more than 370 people, including Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Hon. Louise Upston (MP for Taupo), Barbara Kuriger (MP for Taranaki-King Country) and Andrew Little (Labour List MP)
Excited finalists, colleagues, friends, clients, family, mentors and advisors gathered to celebrate business success in Waipa and Raglan. The exceptional quality of entries into the Awards created a great contest between a diverse range of businesses, resulting in the judges awarding joint winners in two categories.

The judges considered Jigsaw had impressive international reach with a strong use of digital platforms.
Nova Healthcare is a specialist nursing, caregiving and health consultancy agency providing registered nurses, caregivers and consultants to hospitals, resthomes and private clients to assist with specialist care in facilities and at home, particularly for palliative care.
The judges were impressed with Nova’s application of digital technologies in order to achieve business goals.
WAIPA NETWORKS 2017 BUSINESS AWARDS – SUPREME OVERALL WINNER
The winner of the Supreme Overall Award is selected by the Head Judge at the Waikato Management School and members of the Judging Panel. They are the business or organisation that has demonstrated excellence over the 9 areas judged. These include Leadership, Customer Focus and Marketing, Quality and Systems, Business Performance, Planning, People Management, Innovation and Knowledge as well as community and Environmental Contribution.
No 8 HR is this year’s Supreme Overall Winner. No.8 HR encompasses consulting, recruitment, training and development services , providing ‘cradle to grave’ employment services. The judges were impressed with the strong business model and growth, with progressive practices and strong evidence of innovation. No. 8 HR has an impressive geographical spread of activities. Overall, a very professional business with robust systems. This, coupled with a clear strategic vision makes a special business.
No8HR owner and Principal Consultant, Lee Astridge, said her business was absolutely delighted by the wins both in the Medium Business Excellence category and the Supreme Award.

Tania Witheford, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce CEO, said, “This year was the first time we received feedback directly from the public regarding the Employee of the Year finalists for Cambridge. Sir Patrick Hogan made contact with us saying, “ I have travelled the world and have experienced some outstanding service, this young fellow could be at any of those restaurants. Onyx have a great asset in Cheta.”
LesleyAnn Thomas from People in Mind, sponsor of the award, said the award is designed to celebrate employees who go above and beyond their core job description. Cheta’s nomination was full of wonderful, rich examples where he has delivered on the Onyx values. He is a very deserving winner who strives to deliver a great customer experience each and every time.
TE AWAMUTU PEOPLE MANAGER OF THE YEAR
The People Manager of the Year award (sponsored by People4Success) is a wonderful opportunity for local employees to recognise their People Managers and a great way to demonstrate how Waipa is not only a great place to do business; it is also a great place to work.
The winner, Glenn Rawson, bought the business 18 months ago and has gone from strength to strength. To his staff, Glenn is approachable, has an open door policy and knows his team. He invests in the future, always having 3-4 apprentices on board, giving staff access to good quality machinery, tools and vans. Glenn’s staff feel appreciated every day, and appreciates the example he’s setting for them.

WAIKATO MANAGEMENT SCHOOL- EMERGING BUSINESS LEADER OF THE YEAR:
Matt Hird has been awarded Emerging Business Leader of the year Award. The judges are delighted to give this award to Matt. They describe him as a very fair and approachable leader who is clear on what he expects and demands. Matt has a very strong customer focus and believes in person to person relationships.
Matt, was very excited and surprised to receive the Emerging Business Leader Award. Matt acknowledged and thanked his wife Charlene, his wife and business partner for her support , belief and encouragement.
WAIPA DISTRICT COUNCIL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO BUSINESS: Mayor Jim Mylchreest presented Richard Wright with the Outstanding Services to Business award. Richard’s service to his community and the business sector has been long and varied and a deserving winner.
Richard Wright opened a business in Cambridge in 1984 and quickly became involved in the community, especially the business. He was heavily involved in the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and it’s revitalisation as it emerged from a period of non operation. He was on the Retail Committee, was a long standing elected member of the Cambridge Community Board, is currently on the Safer Communities Trust Board and Executive as well as being pivotal in the Sister Cities programmes that Cambridge is involved in (Bihoro and Le Quesnoy).
Richard was humbled by the receipt of the Award, whilst he was “doing what he believes in” and that’s investing in the community he is a part of.
